Mission

The mission of the Northfield Conservation Commission is to promote stewardship of natural and cultural resources in Northfield by:

  • Serving as an educational resource to identify and protect Northfield’s natural resources;
  • Supporting the Northfield Town Plan;
  • Safeguarding the Dog River and associated tributaries;
  • Promoting recreational activities that create a healthy and sustainable community for present and future generations; and
  • Providing guidance to the municipality and private land owners for sustainable land use management applications.

History

In 2007 a group of Northfield citizens got together to form the Northfield Conservation Cooperative.  Over the following year we developed our mission statement (above), organized educational programs for the town, investigated grant opportunities and advocated for the establishment of a conservation commission.  In March 2008 the citizens of the Town of Northfield voted to establish a conservation commission and the Northfield Conservation Cooperative became the Northfield Conservation Commission.  The Select Board appointed seven citizens to serve on the commission:
